What jobs can I get with a Physics degree?

By Althea McConnaughey

From the smallest subatomic particle to the vast expanse of the universe, nothing is too tiny or too big for physicists to investigate.

These scientists design new and revolutionary technologies by observing and measuring natural phenomena, then interpret the data and create theories to explain their observations.

Some physicists concentrate on theoretical subjects like understanding what time is, or how the universe originated.

Or they may well turn their attention to practical applications, like developing more powerful electronic machinery, optical devices, and medical equipment.

The various physics subfields like plasma physics, acoustics, nuclear physics, optics, condensed matter physics, space physics, and atomic and molecular physics offer a lot of chances for physicists to specialize.

And even inside those subfields there are actually more subdivisions like semiconductors, crystallography and superconductivity, which are all components of condensed matter physics.

Having said that, it's important to understand that all physics involves the same fundamental principles.

The resulting overlap makes switching from one subfield to another reasonably simple for physicists looking to advance in their careers.

Research and development remain the principal areas where the majority of today's physics jobs are available, and these types of jobs typically demand the advanced theoretical and mathematical coaching obtained through a Ph.D. degree.

Whether or not a physics student wants to go into fundamental research, industrial research and development, become a tenured faculty member at a college or university, or advance to a managerial level, a Ph.D. in physics will frequently be necessary.

And further knowledge and education through a postdoctoral research fellowship, though not strictly needed, is normally recommended for physicists who would like to hold permanent positions carrying out basic research at universities and government laboratories.

Working as a postdoctoral fellow under experienced physicists trains new PhD graduates to function in their field of specialization and increases their understanding of associated physics topics.

In fact, some employers, particularly those in the information technology industry, strongly choose to only employ individuals who have several years of postdoctoral experience.

A master's degree in physics is generally not adequate to get a job conducting basic research.

Rather, they may possibly discover themselves employed in a variety of jobs that demand a solid physics background, including positions in manufacturing or applied research and development.

A physics student who is particularly interested in functioning in the business sector inside the field of applied research must find a master's degree training program that teaches the practical expertise needed for that profession.

And someone who has a Master's degree in physics plus a State certification is ordinarily in a position to get teaching jobs in high schools or at 2-year colleges.

A bachelor's degree in physics is generally utilized as a preparation for going on to a graduate degree in physics, mathematics, computer science, engineering or perhaps a related field.

But physics graduates that have a bachelor's degree can find jobs as technicians or research assistants in sectors like software development, database administrators, or computer system networking.

Other possibilities include systems analysts, engineering assistants, and private industry applied research aides.

And becoming a science teacher at the secondary school level is another alternative for all those who have their bachelor's physics degree.
